High Fiber Cereals

A couple of years ago, I was visiting family in the South and a discussion about high cholesterol came up during breakfast.  My relatives were eating Cheerios every morning to aid in their quest for lower cholesterol.  I told them, there are many other cereals with a higher fiber content.  So let's take a look at the ones I love.

  1. Kashi Heart to Heart   Kashi cereal has more fiber per serving than Cheerios -- 5 grams versus 3 grams.  Kashi and Cheerios have no cholesterol but Kashi has less sodium with 90 mg per serving compared to 250 mg per serving for Cheerios.  Kashi is the winner and would be the best choice for foods that help lower your cholesterol.
  2. Cascadian Farm Organic Raisin Bran   Post Raisin Bran and Kellogg's Raisin Bran both have 7 to 8 grams of fiber per serving but are loaded with sugar.  Kellogg's has 5 teaspoons of sugar (19 grams) per cup. Cascadian Farm Organic Raisin Bran is high in fiber with 7 grams per serving, and is the better choice with 15 grams of sugar per serving.
  3. Kashi Go Lean   Kashi Go Lean is probably the best cereal for lowering your cholesterol because it has 10-13 grams of protein and 8-10 grams of fiber per serving.  This cereal is nutritious and tasty.  They have several varieties, choose one that sound delicious to you.

If you consume the typical sugary cereal in the morning, maybe it is time to switch to something healthier for you and your family.

  1. I like the Kashi Go Lean because it resembles granola in texture. It's very filling.
